Everyone knows the story. A widower marries an evil woman with two vain daughters. They come to live with him and his sweet-natured daughter. Unfortunately, he dies and the three wicked women treat his daughter in the shabbiest way possible. One night a fairy godmother appears to grant her wishes and off to the ball she goes where she meets the handsome prince who quickly falls in love with her. Cinderella is my favorite fairy tale. It makes me believe that good karma awaits anyone who is kind-hearted and gracious. But the most fascinating thing about this tale is

Why Love is Like Cinderella’s Glass Slipper

In the TV series Sex and the City the jaded Carrie Bradshaw is abashed when Alex Petrovsky tries to woo her with poetry. She seems to think that reading a higher form of literature than prose is dramatic and out of sync with her brash, independent American spirit. I am appalled that any woman (fictional or not) would think that way. For poetry is meant to evoke a powerful emotional and sensual response in the reader or listener. How many have taken to heart Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s forty-third sonnet: “How do I love thee? Let me count the ways. I love thee to the depth and breadth and height my soul can reach, when feeling out of sight for the ends of Being and ideal Grace.”

Men love and express love in myriad ways. An old-fashioned guy is happy to put food on the table as his way of showing his feelings, kind of like saying “I love our family and I will ensure our survival.” A sentimental man will send romantic letters or pay for a sky written ad. Someone creative will paint your portrait or compose a poem. Anyway, you get the picture, right? It is basically through their actions that men actually express how they feel about you. If you’re confused about the signals he’s sending, then read on about some of the ways It is possible for you to confirm that he loves you:

What should you give the love of your life? Every time a special occasion comes along, it gets more and more difficult deciding on what sort of gift to buy. Year in and year out, retailers promote the usual suspects: can’t miss (clothes, accessories, a sound system or plasma TV ), boringly practical (tools for crafting, a sweater for breezy winter nights, cookware), adult (sex toys, aphrodisiacs, lingerie), adventurous (trips abroad, escape weekends, bungee jumping) or totally extravagant (Harry Winston jewelry, a yacht, a business of your own?). Great gifts are those chosen with loving care and the worst are those given for the sake of giving. I have a friend whose husband gives her cash on her birthday with the instruction to “just get something you really like.” She is, undoubtedly, crushed

Tokens of Love and Affection — A Treasure Trove

As a teenager I read dozens, maybe, hundreds of Mills and Boon romance books. There was little variety in plotlines. A tall, dark, handsome man would meet a beautiful woman and while the two fall in love, complications ensue. Then the inevitable happens –they realize how meaningless life would be without each other and so they get married and live happily ever after. What can I say: I’m a sucker for happy endings. It’s not that I’m unaware of the harsh realities of relationships. I’ve had considerable exposure to headlines of suicidal individuals who have been spurned by their ex-loves. I’ve listened to friends’ accounts of love affairs gone bad. I know the cliches. Life is not a bed of roses. Life is just a bowl of pits. And so on and so forth. Yet none of these carry as much weight as
