Everyone knows the story. A widower marries an evil woman with two vain daughters. They come to live with him and his sweet-natured daughter. Unfortunately, he dies and the three wicked women treat his daughter in the shabbiest way possible. One night a fairy godmother appears to grant her wishes and off to the ball she goes where she meets the handsome prince who quickly falls in love with her. Cinderella is my favorite fairy tale. It makes me believe that good karma awaits anyone who is kind-hearted and gracious. But the most fascinating thing about this tale is the glass slipper – so delicate and beautiful. In many ways, the glass slipper is a metaphor for love.
True love is rare. The glass slipper was fashioned in a magical way by the fairy godmother. Where does one find a fairy godmother to do that? True love is precious. Ever imagined how much a glass slipper would possibly cost? True love is delicate. It needs to be carefully nurtured, treated with appreciation and a certain amount of reverence. Glass for shoes –- one better tread lightly with those. True love is a good fit. Only Cinderella’s dainty feet could get into those shoes. True love is beautiful. Need I explain? Next time you watch yet another adaptation of Cendrillon’s story please think of the glass slipper and how it ties the whole story together. Such is love –- it binds us in the most extraordinary way.
